A moist, tender loaf that captures all the flavors of your favorite cinnamon sugar donuts in a convenient bread form. Perfect for breakfast or as a sweet treat with coffee, this easy-to-make bread features a delightful spiced sugar coating that creates a deliciously crunchy exterior.

  • Total Time: 85 minutes
  • Yield: 1 loaf(10 slices) 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • Bread
  • 2 cups (250 g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ cups (300 g) granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 ¼ cups (306 g) whole milk
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • Spiced Sugar Coating
  • ¼ cup (57 g) unsalted butter, melted
  • ½ cup (100 g) granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Oven and Pan: Preheat the oven to 350°F. Take an 8 ½ x 4 ½-inch loaf pan and spray it thoroughly with nonstick cooking spray, ensuring all sides are well coated to prevent sticking.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt. Whisk these ingredients together until they are evenly distributed to ensure uniform leavening throughout the bread.
  3. Combine Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, egg, melted butter, and vanilla extract until they form a smooth, well-combined mixture. Make sure the egg is fully incorporated into the liquid.
  4. Create the Batter: Pour the wet ingredient mixture into the bowl with the dry ingredients. Stir gently with a spatula or wooden spoon until just combined. It’s important not to overmix; stop stirring when you no longer see dry flour. The batter should be somewhat runny.
  5. Bake the Bread: Pour the batter into your prepared loaf pan, using a spatula to spread it evenly. Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for 60-70 minutes. The bread is done when a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with just a few crumbs attached and the top is golden brown.
  6. Initial Cooling: Remove the bread from the oven and allow it to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes. This brief cooling period makes it easier to remove the bread from the pan without breaking.
  7. Prepare for Topping: Carefully remove the bread from the pan and place it on a large piece of parchment paper to catch any excess sugar mixture that will be applied in the next steps.
  8. Apply Butter Coating: While the bread is still warm, use a pastry brush to gently coat the entire surface of the loaf with the melted butter for the topping. Be sure to cover all sides, including the ends.
  9. Create Sugar Coating: In a small bowl, mix together the granulated sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg for the topping until well combined.
  10. Finish with Sugar Coating: Evenly sprinkle the sugar and spice mixture over the butter-coated surface of the bread. Turn the loaf as needed to coat all sides. The warm butter will help the sugar mixture adhere to the bread. Any leftover sugar mixture can be saved for future use.

Notes

  • For the best texture, avoid overmixing the batter, which can result in a tougher bread.
  • This bread freezes well – wrap it tightly in plastic wrap and then aluminum foil before freezing.
  • For an even more donut-like flavor, add a pinch of cardamom to the sugar coating.
  • For a lighter version, you can substitute the whole milk with 2% milk.
  • The bread will keep at room temperature in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
