Chocolate Chip Muffin Crumb Bars: The Ultimate 4-Ingredient Shortcut Dessert Masterpiece with Hazelnut Excellence

A delicious twist on traditional cookie bars, these Chocolate Chip Muffin Crumb Bars feature a buttery crumb base layered with rich chocolate hazelnut spread and topped with more crumbly goodness. Quick to make with muffin mix for a convenient shortcut!

  • Total Time: 35 minutes (plus cooling time)
  • Yield: 16 bars 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 packages (7oz each) Martha White Chocolate Chip Muffin Mix
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup chocolate hazelnut spread

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Oven and Pan: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line a 9×9″ baking pan with parchment paper, allowing some overhang on the sides to easily lift the bars out later. The parchment paper prevents the bars from sticking to the pan and makes cleanup easier.
  2. Make the Dough: In a large bowl combine the muffin mix powder, softened butter, and egg. Use a wooden spoon, your hands, or the paddle attachment on your mixer to combine the ingredients into a soft dough. The mixture should be crumbly but hold together when pressed.
  3. Create the Base Layer: Take half of the dough and press it firmly and evenly into the bottom of the prepared pan, creating a solid base for the bars. Make sure to press it down well to prevent a crumbly bottom.
  4. Add the Chocolate Layer: Spread the chocolate hazelnut spread evenly over the top of the dough base, leaving about a 1/2 inch border around the edges. This border helps prevent the filling from leaking out during baking and makes for cleaner-looking bars.
  5. Add the Crumble Topping: Crumble the remaining dough and sprinkle it over the top of the hazelnut spread, trying to cover it as much as possible. Don’t press the top layer down – the crumbly texture is what gives these bars their name and charm.
  6. Bake to Golden Perfection: Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown. The edges might look slightly darker than the center, which is perfectly normal.
  7. Cool and Cut: Let the bars cool completely in the pan before removing and cutting into squares. This cooling time is crucial as it allows the chocolate layer to set properly.

Notes

  • For an extra indulgent treat, try drizzling melted chocolate over the cooled bars.
  • Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or refrigerate for up to a week.
  • The bars can be frozen for up to 3 months if wrapped tightly in plastic wrap and stored in a freezer bag.
  • Different brands of chocolate hazelnut spread may vary in sweetness, so adjust according to your preference.
  • You can substitute the chocolate hazelnut spread with other spreads like peanut butter, cookie butter, or jam.
