Welcome to DJT: Florida Officially Renames Palm Beach Airport After Donald Trump

In a historic and highly publicized rebranding, Palm Beach International Airport (PBI) officially changed its name to President Donald J. Trump International Airport. The change marks a major symbolic victory for the Republican leader in his adopted home state of Florida, home to his famous Mar-a-Lago resort.

The rebranding makes it the first operational commercial airport in the United States to bear the name of a sitting president.

The Legislative Route to Rebranding

The path to the name change was paved by state-level political maneuvers rather than local initiative:

  • The Law: Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed the naming legislation into law on March 30, following an 81-30 vote in the Florida House and a 25-11 vote in the Senate. The law explicitly preempted local county authority over naming major commercial service airports in the state.
  • The Trademark Deal: Because the name is trademarked, the Palm Beach County Board of County Commissioners entered into a formal licensing agreement with the Trump Organization in May. Under the deal, the airport can use the President’s name and likeness for branding, but Trump is prohibited from receiving any commercial royalties or revenue from airport merchandise sales.
  • The Cost: Transitioning the facilities—including replacing massive terminal signs, roadway markers, public digital displays, and administrative materials—is estimated to cost roughly $5.5 million. Officials noted the expenses will be covered by airport revenues and anticipated state funding rather than local property taxes.

The Dual-Code Logistical Shuffle

While the name change took effect immediately, it has introduced a highly unusual 40-day logistical challenge for the aviation industry regarding airport codes.

1.Aviation Codes Change First :Active immediately.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) shifted their operational codes. Pilots, air traffic controllers, and aeronautical maps now officially recognize the airport as DJT (or KDJT).

2.Passenger Codes Remain Standard :Keep using PBI for now.

The three-letter International Air Transport Association (IATA) code that everyday passengers use to book flights, print boarding passes, and tag luggage will remain PBI for a temporary transition window.

3.The August 18 Final Transition :Complete system alignment.

Following an official request from major carriers like Delta, United, American, JetBlue, and Southwest, the passenger ticketing systems will completely phase out PBI and officially cut over to DJT in airline databases.

The First Flight and Ongoing Operations

The physical transition kicked off in the pre-dawn hours of Thursday morning. Eric Trump and his family flew in on a private plane to ensure they logged the historic first arrival under the new name. “There’s no way in hell I was letting UPS be the first plane to land,” Eric Trump joked in a subsequent media appearance, noting that air traffic control welcomed the aircraft to “President Donald J. Trump International Airport” just after 5:00 AM.

Despite the highly polarized nature of the rebranding, airport officials stress that day-to-day services will experience zero interruptions. Palm Beach County retains full ownership, governance, and operational control over the facility.

To smooth over potential traveler friction, airline industry analysts note that major carriers have implemented temporary hard-coding on their travel websites, ensuring that any passenger typing “PBI” or “West Palm Beach” into a search bar will automatically be directed to the newly christened DJT.
