Southern Fried Apples

A classic Southern comfort dish featuring tender Granny Smith apples caramelized in butter, sugar, and warm spices. Perfect as a side dish or dessert topping!

  • Total Time: 25 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 Granny Smith apples
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Apples
  2. Peel the Granny Smith apples completely, removing all skin. Using an apple corer or a knife, remove the cores from each apple. Then slice the apples into uniform pieces about 1/4-inch thick. Consistent slicing ensures even cooking and prevents some pieces from becoming too soft while others remain firm.
  3. Melt the Butter
  4. Place a large skillet over medium heat and add the 1/2 cup of unsalted butter. Allow it to melt completely, spreading it evenly across the surface of the pan. The butter should be hot but not browned or smoking.
  5. Create the Spiced Syrup
  6. Add the 1/2 cup granulated sugar, 2 tablespoons of cinnamon, and 1/8 teaspoon of nutmeg to the melted butter. Stir continuously until the sugar dissolves completely and the mixture forms a smooth, fragrant syrup. This typically takes about 1-2 minutes.
  7. Cook the Apples
  8. Add the sliced apples to the skillet, gently tossing them to coat evenly with the spiced butter mixture. Cook for 6-8 minutes, stirring occasionally. The apples should become tender but still maintain some structure – they shouldn’t completely break down into applesauce. The syrup will thicken slightly as the apples release their juices.

Notes

  • For a more complex flavor, you can add 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract at the end of cooking.
  • Granny Smith apples are ideal because they hold their shape well when cooked and their tartness balances the sweetness of the dish.
  • These fried apples can be refrigerated for up to 4 days and reheated on the stovetop or in the microwave.
  • Serve warm over vanilla ice cream, pancakes, waffles, oatmeal, or as a side dish with pork chops.
