Fresh French Onion Dip

A rich and creamy homemade onion dip featuring sweet caramelized onions, fresh herbs, and a tangy sour cream base. Perfect for parties, game day gatherings, or anytime snacking with chips or vegetables.

  • Total Time: 1 hour 10 minutes (plus chilling time)
  • Yield: 2 cups (serves 8) 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 tablespoons avocado oil or cooking oil
  • 23 medium-large onions (3 cups), sliced into half moons
  • 3/4 teaspoon sea salt, divided
  • 1/2 cup water for deglazing
  • 23 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup Greek yogurt
  • 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon coarse black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon fresh chives, finely chopped
  • Optional: Everything bagel seasoning for garnish

Instructions

  1. Sauté the Onions
  2. Heat the avocado oil in a large skillet over high heat until shimmering. Add the sliced onions and 1/2 teaspoon of salt, spreading them evenly across the pan. Cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they begin to soften and become translucent.
  3. Caramelize the Onions
  4. Reduce the heat to medium and continue cooking the onions for 45-50 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent burning. The onions will gradually turn golden brown and develop a sweet flavor. If the pan becomes too dry, add a splash of water as needed to prevent sticking and help the caramelization process.
  5. Add Garlic
  6. When the onions are deeply caramelized and jammy in texture, add the minced garlic. Cook for an additional 1-2 minutes until the garlic is fragrant but not browned.
  7. Deglaze and Cool
  8. Remove the pan from heat and deglaze with water, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan. These bits contain concentrated flavor that will enhance your dip. Allow the onion mixture to cool for 10-15 minutes before proceeding.
  9. Combine Ingredients
  10. In a medium bowl, combine most of the caramelized onions (reserving some for topping), sour cream, Greek yogurt, Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, remaining 1/4 teaspoon salt, black pepper, chopped parsley, and chives. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are well incorporated.
  11. Chill and Serve
  12. For best results, refrigerate the dip for 1-2 hours to allow the flavors to meld and the dip to thicken. When ready to serve, transfer to a serving bowl, top with the reserved caramelized onions and a sprinkle of everything bagel seasoning if desired.

Notes

  • For the best flavor, make this dip at least a few hours ahead of time or even the day before serving to allow the flavors to fully develop.
  • This dip pairs wonderfully with potato chips, vegetable crudités, pretzels, or as a spread on sandwiches.
  • Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
  • For a lighter version, you can use all Greek yogurt instead of sour cream.
  • The caramelization process is key to developing the sweet, complex flavor of this dip – don’t rush it!
