Ingredients
Scale
- 1 (16 oz) can of Pillsbury Grands! Buttermilk Biscuits
- 1 lb Jimmy Dean Premium Pork Sausage
- 3 cups frozen Ore-Ida Shredded Hash Browns
- 1 packet (2.75 oz) McCormick Sausage Flavor Gravy Mix
- 2 cups milk
- 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
Instructions
- Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Take a 9×13-inch baking dish and thoroughly grease it with cooking spray or butter to prevent sticking. This ensures easy serving and cleanup after baking.
- Cook the Sausage: In a large skillet over medium heat, add the Jimmy Dean sausage, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon as it cooks. Continue cooking for about 5-7 minutes until the sausage is completely browned with no pink remaining. Drain any excess grease using a colander or paper towels to prevent the casserole from becoming too greasy.
- Prepare the Base: Spread the frozen Ore-Ida hashbrowns in an even layer across the bottom of your greased baking dish. No need to thaw them first – they’ll cook perfectly from frozen. Distribute the cooked sausage evenly over the hashbrowns to create a flavorful foundation for your casserole.
- Mix the Gravy: In a medium bowl, combine the McCormick gravy mix with 2 cups of milk. Whisk thoroughly until no lumps remain and the mixture is completely smooth. Pour this gravy mixture evenly over the sausage and hashbrowns, allowing it to seep down through the layers.
- Add Cheese: Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese in an even layer over the entire casserole. The cheese will melt and create a delicious golden top that binds the casserole together while adding rich flavor.
- Prepare Biscuits: Take the Pillsbury biscuits and cut each one into quarters. This smaller size allows them to cook through properly while distributing the biscuit topping evenly. Arrange the biscuit pieces across the top of the casserole, covering as much of the surface as possible.
- Bake to Perfection: Place the casserole in your preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes until the biscuits have risen and turned golden brown on top, and the casserole is bubbling around the edges. Allow the casserole to rest for 5 minutes before serving to let the layers set properly.
Notes
- For a spicier version, add 1/4 teaspoon of cayenne pepper or use hot breakfast sausage.
- You can assemble this casserole the night before and refrigerate it, just add the biscuit pieces right before baking.
- For added flavor, mix 1/2 cup of diced onions and bell peppers with the hashbrowns.
- If you don’t have gravy mix, you can make a homemade gravy using 2 tablespoons of the sausage drippings, 2 tablespoons of flour, and 2 cups of milk.
- Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated in the microwave or oven.
