The sudden passing of longtime South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham has stunned Washington. New, dramatic details have emerged regarding his final hours, revealing that Graham made a desperate phone call to his scheduler as he began experiencing severe chest pains.
The details of the call, shared by fellow Republican Senator Tommy Tuberville, paint a tragic picture of the 71-year-old senator’s final struggle.
The Last Phone Call: “I Need to Do Something”
According to Senator Tuberville, who spoke to reporters on Monday, Graham’s final plea for help occurred on Saturday evening, July 11, 2026, shortly after he returned from a diplomatic trip to Ukraine.
- The Call to the Scheduler: Graham’s scheduler was at a restaurant with one of Tuberville’s staffers when her phone rang. On the other end of the line was Senator Graham.
- The Exchange: Graham plainly stated, “Listen, I’m having chest pains. You know, I need to do something.”
- The 911 Hesitation: When the scheduler urgently asked, “Did you call 911?” Graham reportedly replied, “No, that’s the reason I called you.”
- The Emergency Response: The scheduler immediately dialed emergency services. Tuberville noted that by the time the scheduler arrived at Graham’s Washington, D.C. home, emergency responders had already knocked the front door down and were actively working on him.
“Worked Himself to Death”
Senator Tuberville reflected deeply on Graham’s relentless work ethic and constant travel, suggesting the senior lawmaker’s ceaseless dedication had physically exhausted him.
“Lindsey basically worked himself to death. Most of us have families. He didn’t have any family, and if we had a couple of days off, he went to that airport. He went somewhere to try to work out something for our country.”
Just prior to his death, Graham had traveled to Kyiv to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, arriving back in the United States on Saturday. President Donald Trump recalled speaking with Graham hours before he passed. Trump noted that the senator mentioned he was feeling very tired from the long trip, but otherwise appeared to be in good spirits and remained highly focused on pushing major legislation through Congress.
Preliminary Medical Findings
While Graham’s office initially announced he had passed away from a “brief and sudden illness,” subsequent preliminary medical examiner findings shed light on the exact cardiac event.
- The Diagnosis: The Washington, D.C. medical examiner’s office preliminarily determined that Graham died from complications related to an aortic dissection stemming from arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease.
- What It Is: An aortic dissection is a rare, life-threatening condition where a tear occurs in the inner layer of the body’s main artery (the aorta).
- The Symptoms: While not a heart attack, the symptoms of an aortic dissection—including severe, sudden chest pain, shortness of breath, and rapid loss of consciousness—frequently mimic heart attacks, making immediate medical intervention critical.
A final autopsy is currently pending to officially confirm the findings. To dispel online rumors and false theories, Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) has also publicly called for the release of Graham’s toxicology report to definitively rule out any potential foul play.
